Carob: The Dog-Safe Chocolate Substitute

Carob: The Dog-Safe Chocolate Substitute

If your dog begs for your chocolate, try carob instead!

Carob is a naturally sweet ingredient made from the pods of the carob tree. It has long been used in human foods as an alternative to cocoa, including candies, baked goods, drinks, and treats. People who avoid chocolate because of a cocoa allergy or sensitivity may also choose carob products.

To us, carob looks and smells remarkably like chocolate—and your dog may think so too! Its rich brown color and warm, chocolate-like aroma make it an especially tempting addition to dog treats.

Unlike chocolate, plain carob does not contain theobromine or caffeine, the substances that make chocolate dangerous for dogs. That makes carob a popular way to give dogs a chocolate-like treat without the chocolate.

At The Dog Treatery, you can find carob in several bakery favorites, including our Peanut Butter & Carob dog cake flavor, Carob Chip Cookies, and other celebration treats finished with our chocolate-looking carob icing.

Your chocolate is still off-limits—but your pup can enjoy a delicious little “chocolate” moment of their own!
